The Lower East Side Ecology Center is holding an e-waste drop off event this Sunday at P.S. 29 from 10am - 4pm. You can bring old phones, computers, batteries, light bulbs, and other defunct electronics for them to be recycled or properly disposed of through the Gowanus E-Waste Warehouse. Remember that old printer sitting in your closet? That tangled knot of wires haunting your drawers? And don't forget all your old cell phones, tapes, and VCRs. It's time to do some spring cleaning and recycle all that E-junk the right way. Next Saturday, April 2nd, the Lower East Side Ecology Center's E-Waste Warehouse in Gowanus will set up shop on Smith Street between President and Union to take all that stuff off your hands.

It's a great time to sift the useless tech and obsolete clunkers out of your house, and send them to a new home, or to be properly disposed. Don't get fined by the city for chucking your electronic waste into your curbside trash. The Gowanus E-Waste Warehouse ensures that the harmful chemicals and heavy metals in all our electronics are disposed of safely, and don't end up in land fills. Items that still works can be refurbished and sold from their space at President Street and Nevins Street, and vintage items are rented as props for plays and movies.

This weekend, on Sunday April 19th, local elementary school P.S. 29 will host its annual Spring Rummage & Recycling Event. It is now illegal, and punishable by a hefty fine, to toss your electronics in the curbside trash. So be sure to dispose of them properly at this pre-Earth Week event. If you can't make it to the event but still have electronics to discard, bring them to Borough Hall next week when Borough President Eric Adams hosts a week long collection in honor of Earth Day in which to shred, swap, recycle and more.  Full details on the flyer below. 

Avoid the April 1st fines for Electronics Recycling

New recycling laws went into effect in January of 2015 to ensure electronics were responsibly discarded. Starting April 1st however, the three month grace period is over and now a $100 penalty kicks in should you forget to recycle those old computers, TVs, phones etc ing your electronics. Check out the city's list of items which can no longer be disposed of with your regular trash and be sure to keep an eye out for E-Waste events citywide in which you can safely drop off your electronics and avoid the fines.

New Year, New Laws for Electronic Waste

If you unwrapped new TVs and iPhones this holiday season, be careful before just discarding your old ones in the trash. Effective January 1st, 2015 it will be illegal to dispose of electronics in with household trash. This is not meant to be a burden, but rather a simple way to avoid toxic materials from entering our waste streams. This change is actually the handiwork of our area's former City Councilman and current Mayor Bill de Blasio. He worked on this issue way back in 2008 and helped get the Lower East Side Ecology Center to do more recycling events in our area as a way to increase education on the topic before enacting policy changes.

If you cannot make it to one of the LESEC's many e-waste events this month, take advantage of their drop off center nearby in the Gowanus area. Laziness is no excuse for adding more pollutants and toxins to the trash.

Got a new smart phone? Upgraded your TV? Don't throw away the outdated models of your electronics... recycle them! This Sunday, the Lower East Side Ecology Center is again teaming up with our local elementary school PS29 for an e-waste collection day. Can't make the drop off, but have e-waste to discard? Fortunately, the LESEC also has their warehouse just a few blocks away in the Gowanus area at the intersection of President & Nevins. Check this website for drop off hours.

While the Cobble Hill Halloween Parade takes place Wednesday afternoon at 4pm (@ Cobble Hill Park), you can begin celebrating early. Our friends at the Lower East Side Ecology Center not only run local electronic recycling events (like this weekend's with XXX people dropping off more than XX tons of gadgets), they're also hosting a community Halloween Party this weekend.

Update from E-waste event

Despite an unfortunate combination of pouring rain and unavoidable construction at P.S.29, the Cobble Hill Association had yet another successful electronics event last weekend with the Lower East Side Ecology Center and the PS29 PTA.  Nearly 150 households came to drop off over 5,120 pounds of electronics!

With 4 years of e-waste events now on the books, we may have finally cleaned out the bulk of the neighborhood's unwanted electronics. However, if you happen to find additional items that need to be safely disposed of before our next event, be sure to visit the Lower East Side Ecology Center's new permanent drop off location here in Brooklyn!

Their warehouse sits at 469 President St (at Nevins) in the Gowanus area and is open to the public on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 10am-5pm; on Wednesdays, noon-7pm; as well as Saturdays, 10am-4pm. They accept household e-waste such as computers, monitors, printers, scanners, TVs, VCR's, DVD players, phones, audio/visual equipment, video games, cell phones and PDAs. All collected materials will be responsibly recycled or reused, so please do your part in helping keep electronics out of our landfills.

With Earth Day right around the bend, the Cobble Hill Association is proud to again take part in a neighborhood electronics-recycling event. Despite the construction in the school yard, the collection will still be held at the PS29 and run by our good friends at the Lower East Side Ecology Center.

Find all those broken gadgets in the house and remind your friends that when electronics are simply thrown in the trash, dangerous wastes and metals seep into our soil and waterways. This event makes it simple to safely dispose of electronics – simply drop them off.

P.S. 29 Principal to Retire

There's a long list of charms that make Cobble Hill such a special place to live, but no family with kids can deny the top quality public school, P.S. 29, is at the top of that list of reasons to live here. Last week, P.S. 29 Principal Melanie Woods announced she will be retiring from the school after 10 years of tremendous work. Lisa Collins at the South Brooklyn Post summarizes her contribution to the community quite well.

Woods is known for her striking problem-solving abilities, her strong support for PS 29′s healthy food initiative in the cafeteria and its food garden, as well as for progressive educational policies. This September, when the number of kindergartners caused crowding, Woods found a way to secure funding to create an extra class after school started (each class had a teacher’s aid thanks to fast summer fundraising by parents and the PTA). Last year, when construction on the new schoolyard closed it down, Woods worked with the 76^th Precinct to close off surrounding streets so kids could play outdoors.

On a personal note, though I do not have kids nor the pleasure of sending them to P.S.29 yet, Melanie Woods has always been fantastic to work with in coordination the neighborhood's annual Electronic Recycling Events and for that I am deeply grateful.  Even this year, as needed repairs to the building temporarily close the school yard and site of our E-waste events, she and other PTA volunteers have made sure to save space for us to hold yet another recycling event this Earth Day, April 22nd.

 

Ongoing Eletronics Recycling

The Cobble Hill Association has had multiple successes with its electronics recycling events held at P.S. 29 because of the collaboration with an amazing group, The Lower East Side Ecology Center. We are proud to report that they've just opened a permanent drop off location here in Brooklyn!

To celebrate the opening, there will be a community reception with light refreshments this coming Saturday, February 4th, noon-4pm offering a chance not only to drop off e-waste but also tour the space and learn more about recycling and the LESEC.

Electronics Recycling Update

Just a few weeks ago, the Cobble Hill Association helped plan yet another electronics recycling event at PS29 with the Lower East Side Ecology Center. With the dedication of amazing volunteers from the school's PTA, the scope of the collection went far beyond computers and cell phones - it included paper shredding, textiles recycling, and even had composting demos from the NYC Compost Project in Brooklyn. All in all, a complete success and we are now report the final tallies.... 212 families came to drop off 4.5 tons of electronics!

Look to the spring for another e-waste event....Tentative date is already set for April 22nd 2012.... Earth Day!

Recycling Day at PS29 - Sunday 10/23

In our continuing efforts to green the neighborhood, the Cobble Hill Association and amazing folks at PS29 are yet again holding an electronics recycling event with the Lower East Side Ecology Center. What's more, it'll include plenty of other recycling opportunities too throughout the day!

• Composting Workshop led by The NYC Compost Project in Brooklyn.  Backyard composters will also be for sale. 
• Computer hard drive shredding provided by eRecycleNY, PS 29 parent owned EPA compliant electronics recycling company serving the NYC area. 
• Clothing rummage sale, proceeds go to PS 29 PTA. Wearable Collections will be picking up remaining clothes, as well as stained & ripped clothing, textiles & stuffed animals.

E-waste Report

Just a few weeks ago, our local elementary school PS29 graciously played host to our Cobble Hill Association electronics recycling event, run by the wonderfully green Lower East Side Ecology Center. The day also included recycling of textiles and plastic, making an all out day of eco-consciousness. While we don't have exact figures on those goods yet, we did get the figures for the electronics materials.

Total tonnage collected: 13,093 pounds, or 6.5 tons of materials
Number of participating households: 257

Those numbers on their own are really quite impressive; More than 6 tons of 'junk' that will avoid going into landfills, and instead get broken down safely and securely. But what's even more interesting is that less tonnage was collected (in 2010 we collected 18,846 pounds or 9.4 tons) because older model electronics are gone and 1st generation smaller, lighter, flat screens are now making their way to the recycling bin. In spite of the smaller haul... even MORE people participated this year (in 2010 only 231 households came out). 

The CHA is glad to have had yet another success, and hope that if you didn't get a chance to participate this time, you'll save those electronics for another e-waste event sometime this fall.

We've already told you about the jam packed line up this Saturday in Cobble Hill, with Electronics Recycling, a Plant Sale, AND a Bike Fest....

But There's even MORE sustainability in the schoolyard at PS29, as they've turned it into a full on mega green event!
