E-Waste Recycling Drop Off Next Saturday

Remember that old printer sitting in your closet? That tangled knot of wires haunting your drawers? And don't forget all your old cell phones, tapes, and VCRs. It's time to do some spring cleaning and recycle all that E-junk the right way. Next Saturday, April 2nd, the Lower East Side Ecology Center's E-Waste Warehouse in Gowanus will set up shop on Smith Street between President and Union to take all that stuff off your hands.

It's a great time to sift the useless tech and obsolete clunkers out of your house, and send them to a new home, or to be properly disposed. Don't get fined by the city for chucking your electronic waste into your curbside trash. The Gowanus E-Waste Warehouse ensures that the harmful chemicals and heavy metals in all our electronics are disposed of safely, and don't end up in land fills. Items that still works can be refurbished and sold from their space at President Street and Nevins Street, and vintage items are rented as props for plays and movies.

Saturday, April 2

Solarize CB6 Upcoming Workshops

Solarize CB6 is a limited time program now underway in our area that offers substantial reductions to the price of installing solar. The initiative is a partnership between the NY Solar Smart Program and Community Board Six. The program's two installers are offering tiered discounts that increase as more neighbors sign on to go solar in bulk. It also leverages the concurrent tax credits offered by the federal, state, and municipal governments. Read more about Solarize CB6 here.

Residents and business owners may get a no commitment site assessment to determine your roof's viability for photovoltaic solar panels. This type of panel generates power directly to your building and earns you a huge cut to your electricity bill. Attend one of these upcoming workshops to learn more information and answer your questions.

E-Recycling 4/25, Plant Sale 5/1

This Sunday, April 25th, the Cobble Hill Association, Lower East Side Ecology Center, and PS29 PTA will be hosting an electronics recycling event at the PS29 schoolyard on Baltic, between Henry & Clinton. Drop off those dead hard drives, broken computers, and clunky old TV's so they don't wind up in our landfills polluting the earth.

Then, with all that extra room space you've cleared out, stock up on plants at the Cobble Hill Tree Fund's Plant Sale. It will run from 10:30a to 3p at Cobble Hill Park, and proceeds help keep the neighborhood green and full of trees. We'll also be on hand selling Cobble Hill Association memberships, T-shirts, and old timey postcards of our quaint streets.

New Tree Plantings, Old Tree Recycling

Much of Cobble Hill's beauty comes from the hundreds of fully grown trees canopying the neighborhood. While most grow more beautiful as they mature, some trees must be trimmed or removed entirely as branches die. This past summer two trees on Clinton Street (one at the corner of Verandah Place, and one opposite Cobble Hill Park) were cut down and dug out by the parks department. Thankfully, two replacements have just gone in recently. It'll take many years for them to recreate the green glory of their predecessors but be sure to stop by and show some eco-appreciaton for the new White Oak and Golden Rain Tree next time you're strolling Clinton Street.

In other tree news... Xmas is over so please remember to recycle your trees at the Cobble Hill Mulchfest.

Saturday, January 9 & Sunday, January 10.

Cobble Hill Park: Clinton and Verandah Place, 10 am – 2:00 PM

Drop off your Christmas trees at the location below. Wreaths and garlands cannot be accepted. Please remove lights and decorations. No artificial trees!

MULCH BAGS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR THOSE WISHING TO TAKE MULCH FOR THEIR GARDENS OR TREE PITS.

Earth Hour: March 28

CHA Green Czar Dave 'Paco' Abraham writes in to remind us that Earth Hour is coming up:
Earth Hour: All parts of the world big and small making a conscious decision to turn off their lights for one hour on March 28, 2009 as a reminder of our planet's conditions and that we DO have the collective ability to change it.

I first heard about this last year and recall specifically unplugging everything I could in my apartment and just hanging out with friends. I kind of envisioned shutting all my lights, unplugging any cords, and perhaps having dinner outside. Maybe some people will play cards by candlelight or just sit and chat enjoying the company of old friends and new acquaintances.
What: Earth Hour
When: March 28, 2009, 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m.
Where: Everywhere

January 26: CB6 meeting on air quality at the cruise terminal

Thanks to the Red Hook community's activism, the Community Board 6 Environmental Protection Committee will hold a meeting on air quality at the cruise terminal on Monday, January 26.

What is the issue? It turns out that, at some ports around the world, ships in port turn off their diesel engines and hook up to the city's electricity grid. This arrangement is known as cold ironing. But the cruise terminal in Red Hook does not use cold ironing. The result: air pollution in Brooklyn whenever the ships are in the port. Now the community will have a chance to find out what can be done about it. According to the CB6 website, the meeting will include a:
Presentation by representatives for the Economic Development Corporation and the Port Authority on the Clean Air initiative being undertaken at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal at Pier 12 in Red Hook.
What: CB6 Environmental Committee meeting
When: January 26, 2009 at 6.30 p.m.
Where: P.S. 15 The Patrick Daly School, 71 Sullivan Street (between Van Brunt and Richards)
