Next Concert in the Park Tuesday the 26th, Featuring Rookin

This Tuesday, SweetCane brought out the neighbors to groove out in the park. The second concert of the series features Brooklyn-based folk/soul group Rookin. You can listen to and buy their EP The Lookout here. As always the concert is free and open to the public, at 7:00pm, Tuesday the 26th in Cobble Hill Park.

The final concert of the season will be the following Tuesday, August 2nd, featuring AudraRoxSteady.

Fence upgrade at Cobble Hill Park

If you’ve noticed that the iron fence around Cobble Hill Park is looking better and brighter, you’re seeing correctly! With the collaboration of The Friends of Cobble Hill Park, local businesses, the Cobble Hill Association, and private donations, a major rehabilitation and painting of the perimeter fence is currently underway. Much of the labor is being supplied by The Friends of Cobble Hill Park, the volunteer group that has tended the half-acre park for nearly 30 years.

In conjunction with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, and supported by the Cobble Hill Association, the volunteers of FCHP regularly plant, water, weed, clean, and repair the park’s greenery and grounds. They also spearhead special improvement projects, like last year’s tree survey, which involved the surveying, pruning, and protecting of the park’s forty trees, an endeavor funded by the Cobble Hill Association and the Cobble Hill Tree Fund.

This year’s special assignment is the fence upgrade, organized by longtime resident Barbara Krongel, in which several hundred feet of fencing are being scraped, primed, and painted. "That fence is a major feature," Krongel said, "and when it's shabby, the entire place is affected." John Parker, owner of JP Interiors, arranged for a Benjamin Moore representative to inspect the site and make recommendations. "I know many of my customers love the park and I wanted to contribute," he said. And JP Interiors’ staffers contributed as well, by helping with scraping and prep work. They aren’t the only generous friends of the park: Matt Mazzone of Mazzone's Ace Hardware donated paint and supplies, while store manager Liz Civiletti and staff answered endless questions from the willing but inexperienced volunteers. The local NYC Parks Department district office has provided logistical support.

Because the job is so enormous, other organizations are also pitching in. Hannah Gall and Jaimie Beddoe of Partnership for Parks, a joint program of City Parks Foundation and the NYC Parks Department, recently fielded a crew of over seventy fence-painting volunteers from Viacom. And new Cobble Hill resident, Liz Ott, an operations manager with YouTube, is recruiting colleagues from her office for a June 30th volunteer day at the park.

Don't Trash Your Tree, Mulch It!

Happy New Year Cobble Hill! The NYC Parks Department will be running its annual Mulchfest, where the city collects christmas trees to be chipped into mulch. Rather than leaving your tree on the curb, "treecycle" it at Cobble Hill Park next weekend on January 9th and 10th. Bringing your tree to Mulchfest saves the DSNY time and money and supplies the Parks Department with mulch that it uses in its stewardship of the city's natural areas. Mulch will also be available at Cobble Hill Park for any home gardeners.

Halloween Parade Tomorrow

Happy Halloween Cobble Hill! The costumes are getting their final touches and everyone's ready to trick-or-treat! The costume parade will congregate in Cobble Hill Park tomorrow, leaving at 4:00pm. We will proceed from Congress Street to Henry Street, head south on Warren Street, and turn back to Clinton Street to return to Cobble Hill Park. The residents of the Cobble Hill Health Center are looking forward to seeing our costumes when the parade passes by on Henry! The route will be led by Captain Colon, Commanding Officer of the 76th Precint, and the Packer High School Jazz Band. See you tomorrow!

Halloween is Around the Corner!

Out come the cob webs, phantoms, and ghouls when the Cobble Hill Halloween Parade creeps up this autumn. Prepare your costumes for our annual gathering, and we'll see you in the park.

Music in the Park Concert Series Returns

Cobble Hill Parks's FREE concert series returns this summer with a new line up that's sure to please the whole family. Performances are every Thursday evening at 7pm for the next four weeks, starting this Thursday the 23rd with jazz guitarist Adam Smale. Rain dates are the following Friday when possible.

Spring is in full bloom and so it's time for the Cobble Hill Tree Fund's annual plant sale. Save the date for the event at Cobble Hill Park. And while you're thinking of plants to improve your own garden, why not consider a donation to help improve our neighborhood's green space?

2015 marks the 50th anniversary of Cobble Hill Park. At slightly more than a half acre, it was the City’s first vest pocket installation, established as a passive use environment to complement the surrounding brownstone area. It is well used and well loved.

Every Tuesday morning, spring through fall, you will find volunteers working there to supplement the tremendous efforts of the NYC Parks Department. This attention makes for brighter flowers, healthier leaves, and a welcoming environment for young and old. And yet, there is still some much needed maintenance that the volunteers cannot tackle and the Parks Department cannot address as often as is desirable.

The Cobble Hill Association, in conjunction with the Parks Department has begun to address some of these issues. It commissioned both a detailed survey of the Park’s aging trees and a detailed scope of work to address their ongoing needs. The recommendations for pruning and bracing have been accomplished, with funding from the Association and supervision by the Parks Department. Additional plans call for soil amendment and mulching, again to be supervised by the Parks staff. This extra effort will assure the community of a safe and enjoyable environment for decades to come.

This important work is underwritten by the community as are the supplies needed for the plantings and volunteer efforts throughout the year. Last weekend marked the start of spring and so we now ask that you consider giving the best gift you can to support these efforts. The Cobble Hill Tree Fund and a few generous residents have already begun lending financial support to help pay for both the current improvements and guarantee the park remains a cherished center of our community in the years ahead. We hope you will now join the cause too.

Madam Secretary filming in Cobble Hill Park

Yet again, Cobble Hill Park will serve as the backdrop to another locally made TV series. Next Wednesday, March 11th keep your eyes peeled for several scenes taking place in and around Cobble Hill Park of the CBS series featuring Tea Leoni.

Expected scenes include...
1. a walk and talk in Cobble Hill Park where Madam Secretary and her husband are jogging along a path
2. a driving shot on Verandah Place which consists of a family getting in their car preparing for a lesson on driving
3. an interior scene in another house on Verandah place.
4. an exterior scene on Congress consists of an actress walking up to a door

Cobble Hill Park Tree maintenance

Snow has fallen several times this week and that means added weight sits on the branches of our trees in Cobble Hill Park. A healthy tree can handle the load but weak limbs are likely to fall and injure those below. Thankfully our parks committee has taken special interest in tree maintenance and coordinated with the forestry division of NYC Parks Department to ensure the health of our neighborhood's green oasis. Last week, a crew came to stabilize the crown of a seventy year old wounded elm by the Verandah Street entrance to the park. Check out the video and images below to see how effortlessly NYC Park's green team scaled the enormous tree to give it much needed TLC. 

MulchFest this weekend, Sat & Sun 10a-2p

The Cobble Hill Tree Fund already held a tree chipping event in Cobble Hill Park last weekend but there are still many more trees to recycle. This Saturday - January 10th - the park will again be the site of a tree chipping Mulch Fest with the NYC parks Department, both Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 2pm. Strip the tree of ornaments etc and make sure its it responsibly discarded.
