Volunteers Needed: The Tree Fund is seeking volunteers to help run the plant sale and children's activities. Ideally 2-3 hour shifts between 9:30am & 4:30pm. If you would like to help out, please email Georgia Willett at gawillett@earthlink.net.

Spring is in full bloom and so it's time for the Cobble Hill Tree Fund's annual plant sale. Save the date for the event at Cobble Hill Park. And while you're thinking of plants to improve your own garden, why not consider a donation to help improve our neighborhood's green space?

Reminder - this Saturday is the annual tree-chipping in Cobble Hill Park run by the NYC Parks Department and the Cobble Hill Tree Fund.  Don't just leave your tree out as trash... recycle it into fresh mulch!

With the holiday season upon us, there will soon be many Christmas trees to discard. Don't toss them out with the trash, bring them over to Cobble Hill Park for the Tree Fund's annual recycling event in cooperation with the Brooklyn Parks and Recreation Department.

New Tree to Honor an Old Friend

The Cobble Hill Association is happy to announce 4 new tree plantings in the neighborhood. Courtesy of the Cobble Hill Tree Fund, new Silver Linden trees have been placed in restored tree pits on both Warren Street and Congress Street. The Warren Street additions are near the corner of Court Street while the Congress Street addition is beside the Cobble Hill Health Center's newly landscaped perimeter.

We appreciate seeing all the new trees that keep our streets beautiful and our air clean, but we are most especially grateful to see the Silver Linden on Congress Street between Henry and Hicks. The Association made a request to plant this tree here in honor of our dearly departed friend, former Cobble Hill Association president Murray Adams. He offered tireless service to better the community and was especially focused on improving health care in Cobble Hill. With that in mind, we wanted to situate this new tree near the Cobble Hill Health Center, a source of remedy and rehab for so many lives in the neighborhood.

Update on Hurricane Sandy Damage to Cobble Hill Trees

This info just in, courtesy of Cobble Hill Tree Fund, Co-chairs, Tom Synnott and Georgia Willett

Cobble Hill sustained a considerable amount of damage to it's street trees during Hurricane Sandy and the subsequent Nor' Easter. Cobble Hill Tree Fund volunteers have surveyed the damage to the street trees of  Cobble Hill.

They have have found that seven trees were either uprooted or severely damaged beyond saving. Another seven trees were severely damaged, and their fate is still to be determined. Additionally, another eight trees were moderately damaged. It's clear that a substantial number of trees will need replacing. As it happened, they were already doing a Fall tree planting when the storms hit. Fortunately they were able to replace one of the trees that had been uprooted at 240-242 Baltic Street, and hope to replace several additional trees over the coming year.

We would appreciate hearing from CHA members if their local tree needs replacing or serious pruning. The Cobble Hill Tree Fund has some funds available to help with these costs and hopes to raise more.

We had a detailed report from the Cobble Hill Tree Fund at our last meeting and many voiced wanting to see even more trees added to the neighborhood. Well, this weekend there's a 150 Free Tree Giveaway that Build It Green! NYC and the Gowanus Canal Conservancy are co-hosting as part of the MillionTreesNYC program.

Annual Spring Plant Sale - Sat 4/28

Though its been warm for weeks already this year, it is just now time for the Cobble Hill Tree Fund's annual Spring Plant Sale. Come pick up fresh plants at Cobble Hill Park, Clinton Street between Congress & Verandah, this coming Saturday.

There will be a wide variety of annuals, herbs, and perennials to choose from as well as a selection of geraniums and hanging baskets.   You'll also be able to gather information about the Cobble Hill Tree Fund's other activities, composting opportunities, and the Cobble Hill Association in general. Due to the tremendous response last year, they will once again be setting up the Plant Identification Treasure Hunt in the Park. Bring the kids, it's fun for all ages! Winners will receive a free plant!

Cobble Hill Tree Fund Annual Plant Sale

With the warmer weather upon us, the Cobble Hill calendar of events is filling out nicely. You can always peruse it through the Google Calendar embedded on the right side of the screen, and will notice major events like the Brooklyn Gateway Transportation Forum on 3/31, the Electronics Recycling Event in our area on Earth Day 4/22, and now another item is announced... the Cobble Hill Tree Fund's Annual Plant Sale will be April 28th, from 10a-2p @ Cobble Hill Park. Pick up some new plants for the summer, and swing by the Cobble Hill Association's table to join/renew your membership and pick up a T-shirt or two printed with the neighborhood logo!

Mulchfest: Update

This weekend saw another successful Mulchfest in our neighborhood.  Over 500 Christmas trees were collected and chipped in Cobble Hill Park with the help of the Cobble Hill Tree Fund and NYC Department of Parks & Recreation.

While trees are an important part of holiday decorations, please remember to always dispose of them properly. NYC Sanitation will collect trees left on the sidewalk with regular trash collection, but bringing them to mulchfest sites allows them to be made into wood chips that nourish trees and plants on streets and gardens citywide.

LOCATION: Cobble Hill Park: Clinton and Verandah Place
TIME: 9:30 am – 1:30 pm

Bring your holiday tree to Cobble Hill Park, at Clinton Street and Verandah Place, and other locations city-wide, to be recycled into mulch that will nourish plantings across the city!

Join us and New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, the New York City Department of Sanitation, and GreenNYC to recycle your Christmas trees into wood chips.
These wood chips are used to nourish trees and plants on streets and gardens citywide. Or, take home your very own bag of mulch to use in your backyard or to make a winter bed for a street tree.

Last year, close to 17,000 Christmas trees citywide were recycled. Please help us top this number! This year, MulchFest will take place on January 7 and 8, 2012. Parks will host over 35 chipping sites and 35 additional drop-off locations: over 70 sites in all! And this year, you can bring your tree to a drop-off site from January 2 through January 8. It’s easier than ever to chip in!

Please remember to remove all lights and ornaments before bringing the tree to a MulchFest site. Biodegradable bags will be provided if you wish to take some free mulch home.

Wreaths, garlands, and artificial trees cannot be accepted and remember that tress will NOT be accepted after the scheduled times.

Same deal as last year: $10 for a large bag or large box of shredding. The school receives $5 and Time Shred Services receives $5.
