The Cobble Hill "Music in the Park" concert series continues this week! Please join us tonight, Thursday, at 7pm.

Thursday, July 31st: The Bodega Tall Boys
A gang of barnstormers from New York City and Brooklyn, The Tallboys have been at it for only a year but their sound is the timeless kind, born of lost highways and deep woods. Collectors of roughhewn country and soul tunes, rambling ballads, original barnyard stompers, and classics turned on their heads, this five-piece heart-on-its-sleeve outfit of guitars, mandolin, banjo, harp, sax, and percussion, plays musical chairs every time they take the stage. They swap instruments, trade off vocals, and always deliver a high-octane performance and their infectious brand of urban Americana

Rain Date for all concerts is the following Friday when possible.

Music in the Park Concert series begins this week

The Cobble Hill Association kicks off our 2014 summer concert series this Thursday at 7pm with young folk singer Nadim Silverman. Come join us at Cobble Hill Park and enjoy the music, the park, and a perfect summer evening in the neighborhood.

Share traffic safety concerns by 7/31

Mayor DeBlasio's Vision Zero plan aims to end the epidemic of traffic crashes that claim nearly 200 lives each year and severely injure thousands more. Since January, the city has brought the Department of Transportation, NYPD, Taxi & Limo Commission, and Department of Health together in workshops, presentations, and public meetings to discuss the problems in all communities and solicit feedback on solutions. For those who haven't made any of the meetings in person, they have allowed for online exchanges via a mapping tool at the website below.

Cobble Hill is not immune from traffic violence and we all see too much of it every day. Please take time to add your own input, and comment on suggestions others have already made, before the public dialogue period ends July 31st.

Judge blocks towers, Politicians hope to halt development

As Mary Frost reports in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, a new park advocacy group - People for Green Space Foundation - has won a temporary restraining order that prevents Brooklyn Bridge Park from moving forward with its Request for Proposals (RFP) that could bring two residential towers to the foot of Atlantic Avenue adjacent to Cobble Hill. The advocates have argued that the RFP was altered after the fact to include affordable housing, a key issue that Mayor DeBlasio has raised citywide in all potential developments.

In response, the four local elected officials - State Senator Daniel Squadron, Assemblymember Joan Millman, and City Councilmembers Brad Lander and Steve Levin - released a joint statement below:

"This lawsuit is yet another example of why we have urged the administration to stop moving forward at a breakneck speed on the Bloomberg-era plan for housing at Pier 6, and instead begin to work with the community.
“We have long voiced concern about housing in the park and will continue to do so, especially in light of the continued unknowns at the LICH site, which is a stone’s throw from Pier 6 and will have infrastructure and planning impacts on the same immediate area. The Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation and the Administration should immediately cease any action on this RFP and begin a community-driven process to revisit other viable options to the Bloomberg plan for housing at Pier 6."

The Cobble Hill has long been opposed to housing within Brooklyn Bridge Park, and instead hopes to see all park land maximized for the active use of the residents of Brooklyn. Judi Francis, president of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Defense Fund - of which the CHA is a coalition partner - added, “We are now at a crossroads and look to the Mayor’s leadership to pull us away from the draconian Bloomberg policy of privatizing our public parks with private housing.” The Defense Fund's full statement can be found here.

"The Intern" filming in Cobble Hill on Thursday 6.26

Our neighborhood continues to draw attention citywide, and this week Warner Brothers is coming to visit. They'll be using our local park for a scene in an upcoming project called 'The Intern.' You've likely already seen signs posted in the neighborhood as some parking restrictions will be in effect in and around Cobble Hill Park. We thank the studio for reaching out to the community in advance and know they will be partners in resolving any issues that may arise from this temporary inconvenience.

Cobble Hill Association Statement on Long Island College Hospital

BROOKLYN – Today, the Cobble Hill Association released the following statement regarding Long Island College Hospital (LICH):
The Cobble Hill community is deeply disappointed that the SUNY Board has chosen a developer who is not committed to building and maintaining a full service hospital in Brooklyn – especially as viable alternatives existed that would have provided for the immediate resumption of ambulance service and the ER department and which would have conducted a critically needed community needs assessment to help guide healthcare decision-making. SUNY's decision to proceed with the sale of LICH marks the end of a purely benevolent institution that served its community for over 156 years with compassion and dignity. There were no reasons for this tragic closure other than SUNY's mismanagement, lack of vision, andgreed. We still have much work to be done, but today we mourn the passing of our beloved institution.

Children's Music at Carroll Gardens Library

This coming Friday, swing by the Carroll Gardens Library at 4 pm for entertaining children's music by Brooklyn based band Circuit & Jojo. 

Circuit & Jojo are two Brooklyn-based musicians that combine electronica and acoustic guitar to create a contemporary and colorful kid friendly sound. Circuit is a parent, musician, and visual artist who spends his time juggling creative and parental responsibilities. Jojo is a musician and photographer who also facilitates workshops in music and photography for children of all ages.

Save LICH Updates

This weekend, the fight to keep our hospital alive had additional twists and turns, from Judge Baynes tossing out our case to re-score the blatantly suspect RFP evaluations to SUNY moving one step closer to a new LICH deal with Fortis Developers.  With countless ups and downs happening in the blink of an eye during this ongoing effort, our Cobble Hill Association twitter feed - @CobbleHillAssoc - has always the best place to get updates on that topic.
