upcoming Friends of Christ Church launch

Christ Church is still hurting from the lightening storm damage it suffered months ago. Recently, many of you may have received this invite in the mail and already responded. If not, please click the image below for full details of the benefit and learn how you can help the local congregation.

Interesting, what is the fund raising effort for? The DOB closed the building right? I would imagine it would take millions of dollars to stabilize the badly damaged building? The event does not indicate where or what specifically the funds are going to be used for - can someone clarify? Thanks

There is a commitment to rebuild the historic church. The building is undergoing repairs in compliance with the NYC Department of Buildings statutes and code. It has been stabilized in a safe manner and interior and exterior scaffolding has been erected. Its iconic bell tower has been dismantled. The work has been funded, to date with funds from an insurance settlement. It is not known if the settlement will pay for all repairs needed for the exterior and interior damage to the church building and tower.

Its Parish House, however, does not appear to be structurally compromised. However, it needs further evaluation by a forensic engineer. The church vestry and the newly formed neighborhood group, Friends of Christ Church Cobble Hill, would like to re-open that building as soon as possible to resume worship and community activities since the church was used by more than 40 community groups in 2011. Hiring a forensic engineer for an inspection and report is one of the first things that can be done with the donations to be raised by the kick-off of the Friends of Christ Church Cobble Hill. It is just one example of what needs to be done to return this community asset to our neighborhood.
