CHA creates a SAFER intersection

After months identifying several dangerous street conditions in our area, members of the Cobble Hill Association discussed potential improvements, collectively formed a presentation with several ideas for solutions, and then brought it to the Department of Transportation. Thankfully, last week an  important element of the CHA's plan got a unanimous vote of approval from Community Board 2's Traffic and Transportation Committee, and will now allow the DOT to improve the intersection of Pacific and Court streets.
As the image above makes it clear, vehicles already park in the Northeast corner's existing "No Standing Zone." This creates a severe danger to motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists all merging at the intersection. The CHA believes an installation of on-street bicycle parking could offer a 24/7 solution that would not only enforce the existing "No-Standing" regulation but also addresses the demand for bicycle parking from Trader Joe’s and other retailers. With the new Atlantic Avenue BID signed on as a maintenance partner, DOT agreed, and now thankfully CB2's endorsement has given the project a green light.

This was by no means the only idea the CHA proposed to make our streets safer. Other suggestions include additional crosswalks on Court street at Congress street, adjusting parking regulations in front of Trader Joe's to allow more loading and unloading without double parking, and adding neckdowns at the Amity/Dean intersection across Court Street (first with planters and paint, eventually with expanded sidewalks). TONIGHT - share ideas w/ the NYC Fieldhouse at Brooklyn Bridge Park

As you know, the NYC Fieldhouse, a not-for-profit organization, has offered to underwrite the design and construction of a year round, multi-purpose recreational and cycling facility on Furman Street near Pier 5 in Brooklyn Bridge Park. (if you didn't know that, read some of those details right here). 

We hope you will be able to attend one of three upcoming forums to learn more and share ideas on programming and design with representatives from NYC Fieldhouse and Brooklyn Bridge Park. 

Public input will help shape the overall use of the facility and is important to the process.

Atlantic Avenue Restaurant Hop next weekend

Atlantic Avenue is the place to be! This Saturday, June 16th, you can check out the Atlantic Avenue extravaganza from the BQE entrance all the way down to Third Avenue and then next weekend enjoy the Atlantic Avenue Restaurant Hop. All you need is a $15 wristband to land amazing deals at over 15 participating restaurants on Atlantic June 22 through 24th. Proceeds from the sale of the wristbands will benefit the Dodge YMCA's Strong Kids Campaign.

Carroll Gardens Library Updates

Not only did the Friends of Carroll Gardens Library recently hold their 2012 Love Your Library Day Book Sale, they've also given the Cobble Hill Association a big nod of gratitude in their recent newsletter.

Thank you to the Cobble Hill Association - the CHA's recent $500 grant to the Friends of the Carroll Gardens Library went toward the purchase of a portable PA system.  Before this purchase there was no sound system for music and presentations in the library.  This PA system will allow the library and the Friends group to bring more authors, speakers, music and movies to the library!

Also FYI, the Carroll Gardens Library will be closed for two months this summer due to much-needed roof repairs to our 107 year old building.  The branch will be closed from June 15 through the end of August.
